Fear and Loathing for the Gen-X Crowd: Gutter to the Stars Crashes Into The Substack Bookstore
A raw, riotous, continent-spanning coming-of-age that drags you through the margins and leaves you strangely hopeful.
Today is a big day for one of our own.
Latimer Redlance (writing as Obsidian Blackbird.), one of the most loyal members of The Substack Bookstore community, a supporter of countless indie authors, a commenter, a cheerleader, a genuine human, has just launched his debut memoir, Gutter to the Stars.
And for launch week only, it’s just US$0.99.
(Ninety-nine cents for 430+ pages of wild, brutal, hilarious, heart-punching storytelling.)
Here’s why this book is blowing people away…
A Gen-X beat memoir that will make Millennials and Gen Z grateful for Wi-Fi
Latimer has written something rare: a true underground memoir that feels like a cross between Fear and Loathing, On the Road, and the diary of a kid who survived the 80s and 90s with nothing but stubbornness, luck, and rage.
This is the anti-Eat-Pray-Love, the antidote to polished, pseudo-philosophical memoir fluff.
It’s messy, honest, grungy, real.
And holy hell, it’s entertaining.
“A wild true tale of peril, indulgence and redemption… a beatnik for the modern age.” — Substack Reader
“His stories are too good to read off a screen. They deserve a book.”
“We need less saccharine BS and more of this grungy, honest stuff.”
“I’m buying this for my 15-year-old so she can see how we suffered before smartphones.”
What’s inside the madness?
A life lived on the margins, across four countries:
🇨🇦 Frozen Gulf Islands of 1980s Canada
🇳🇿 Brutal boarding schools + bush raves of 1990s Aotearoa
🇦🇺 Rooftops and backstreets of early-2000s Sydney
🇨🇦/🇺🇸 The grit of Toronto and the long road to recovery
And yes: a young Ryan Gosling makes an appearance. So does Jaz Coleman from Killing Joke. So do a thousand misfits, freaks, punks, addicts, poets and lost kids just trying to survive without Google Maps, therapy, or a safety net.
Latimer calls it “nostalgia with teeth,” and that’s exactly right.
“Can you imagine one of today’s 20-year-olds getting catapulted back into the 90s? They would lose their f***ing minds.”

I'm on chapter 4. This is a really cool book for anyone who wants to travel in time and know how things went back then! Thank you so much for introducing us to this book. It feels like a friend is telling their wild stories over a cup of beer (except I read it at my desk, and I don't drink beer!). I already submitted my Amazon review. I highly recommend this book.
Purchased and looking forward to the read.
